Of course I always start with Bob Clarks Proto-Slasher Classic 'Black Christmas', thought of by many as the first 'real' Slasher film, preceding Carpenters genre defining Classic by 3 years, the film sets the scene for what would become a new Golden age in horror history a decade later.
The film follows a group of teenage girls as they are terrorised by prank phone calls at their sorority house on Christmas Eve. As the girls begin to disappear one by one, they enlist the help of the police in attempt to find the origin of the calls, calls that seem to be coming rom inside the house.
It's certainly a classic, and theres not a lot of reason why this should be set in the Holidays, but the time of year adds a bizarre juxtaposition to the main meat of the story that helps to maintain an unsettling tone through out. The films climax is simply amazing, a perfect balance of scares and tension presented on the back of its slow boil throughout the films run time.
The film was remade in 2006, but we'll get to that :)
Happy Horror Holidays
See You Tomorrow
